Pay close attention to the commentary on board, which will tell you all about the history of this Charente-Maritime monument.
Fort Boyard was built in the days when land-based cannons could not reach far enough to protect the Charente estuary, the Isle of Aix and Rochefort from attack by enemy ships. But advances in artillery technology outstripped its construction, rendering it useless from a military point of view by the time it was completed. It was eventually converted and used as a prison.
Listed as a ‘Historic Monument’, Fort Boyard is now known the world over for the famous TV game show, filmed on site since 1990.

However, under certain conditions (port facilities not accessible for the safe embarkation or disembarkation of these people, more than the number of places reserved for their use on board, the size of the ship or its access doors making embarkation physically impossible), access on board will not be possible.
