Visit the Musée du Nouveau Monde and its collections of paintings, engravings, drawings, sculptures, old maps and decorative objects related to the theme of the New World. Three rooms on the second floor are also devoted to temporary exhibitions, which you can discover during your visit.
During your visit, from the ground floor to the second floor, you will explore the history of relations between France and the Americas, and learn in particular how La Rochelle was one of the main ports of trade and emigration to the New World: New France, the West Indies... not forgetting the exhibition of one of the museum's must-sees: Edouard Pinel's painting illustrating the port of La Rochelle in 1762!
The ground floor: welcoming visitors from abroad
6 rooms dealing respectively with : The discovery of the Americas; La Rochelle, a port city; The slave trade; Colonial production; The abolition of slavery; The study.
The first floor: from New France to the Amerindian tribes
10 exhibition rooms presenting : Explorations in the 16th century; History of New France; The fur trade; Hurons and Iroquois; American independence; Plains Indians and the push west; The French and the California gold rush in 1848; Edward Curtis and the American Indian peoples.
The second floor: America as seen by Europeans
5 rooms devoted to : Allegories of America; Allegories of the four continents; Images of South America; Arts and literature (1650-1850); Contemporary art; Temporary exhibitions.
Opening hours
From 15 June to 15 September and all school holidays in zone A: open Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, Sundays and public holidays from 10am to 6pm, Saturdays from 2pm to 6pm.
From 16 September to 14 June, excluding zone A school holidays: open Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, Sundays and public holidays from 10am to 12.30pm and from 1.30pm to 5.30pm, Saturdays from 1.30pm to 5.30pm.
Exceptional closures on 1 May, 14 July, 1 and 11 November, 25 December and 1 January.

The Musée du Nouveau Monde bears witness to relations between France and the Americas, and presents its thematic collection in the prestigious setting of a former 18th-century mansion, the Hôtel Fleuriau.
